Axes Tell Stories

Forged from U.S.-made high-carbon steel, the Allagash Cruiser emulates the legendary Maine Wedge axe pattern, and is finely honed to be “wicked sharp.” The 2.5 lb. head is then hung on an A+ quality, Amish-turned, 28” hand-hafted hickory handle.

Solo Stove x Brant & Cochran Allagash Cruiser FAQ's

Linseed oil is typically used on the handle to keep the wood from drying out and splitting. Use a light coat, rub with a cloth, and apply it to the handle being sure to also cover both ends of the wood.

A combination of axe bit wax and handle oils are available for purchase in the Field Kit on the Brant & Cochran website.

Your axe will arrive “wicked sharp” from the workshop at Brant & Cochran, but should you find yourself in need of sharpening the axe after continued use, we’d recommend using the resources on the B&C website.

Remember, a sharp axe is a safe axe.

Brant & Cochran uses billets of U.S.-made 1050 high-carbon steel.

1050 steel is known to be highly durable, while also having the ability to hold its edge resistance stains and rust.

The Campfire Log and the Allagash Cruiser Head Cover are made by The Holler Leatherworks and are sourced from USA tanneries and hand-stitched in Maine, approximately 20 miles from the B&C workshop.

Brant & Cochran was the name of Steve and Mark Ferguson’s (founders of B&C) grandfather’s tool supply business which operated in Detroit, Michigan from the late 1940’s until 1976.

Many of Grandpa Leland’s children and grandchildren inherited tool boxes stuffed with wrenches, micrometers, calipers, and gauges among other tools. Stuffed in one of these tool boxes Mark found a number of matchbooks from the original Brant & Cochran. The red B&C matchbook included in this kit pays homage to the original designs that Mark and Steve’s Grandfather, Leland, used to market his tool supply business.
